We’re off on a new season! This one is a three-part miniseries, in which we drop into the barrel of the massive AI-generated content wave more colloquially known as… AI slop. Our latest story examines questions like: What exactly is AI slop? (Particularly when it comes to AI-generated podcasts, our own area of interest.) Who is behind it all? What does it mean for the human storytelling that we care about?
But first, we had to find it. Which is harder than you might think, with so much of it camouflaging itself amidst our human-made work. So for this first episode, I built my own AI-generated podcast detector, located thousands of AI-hosted shows, and dove straight into the muck, emerging with my own taxonomy of AI-generated podcasts. We got the Shell Game band back together to put those findings to the test, and to see whether it’s possible to build an AI-generated podcast that a listener would actually find meaningful.
